The Greatest Commercial I’ve Seen…

If you're new here, you might want to check out the RSS feed so you can keep up with my ramblings from the comfort of your own reader.

… in a very long time, at least. I can’t even remember the last time I saw one better. But, there has to be one, right? I mean, it’s just a Pontiac ad. I should like the Budweiser frogs better, right? Or the 1984 Apple ad. Wrong. Have I no respect? The new Pontiac G8 commercial is quite possibly the best commercial I’ve ever seen. Check it out below.

While watching the UNC vs Kansas game (UNC was so close!) I caught a new Pontiac commercial. The best way I can think of to describe it is a video collage (you can watch it above).

Why do I love it? Let me count the ways…

  1. It’s atypical. That can be a good or a bad thing. It’s a big plus here.
  2. It’s well-produced. Somehow, the creative team managed to be completely professional, but willy-nilly at the same time.
  3. It’s creative. I really love the style. It somehow reminds me of a good print collage and a Monty-Python animation (but good). It makes you wonder if the gray-haired, suit-wearing execs at Pontiac knew what they were signing off on (and that’s a good thing). It’s young if that’s possible.
  4. It’s in your face. I’m an in-your-face kind of guy. I don’t like it when commercials say stuff like “the leading brand” or “our competitor”. If you’ve got something to say, just say it. Pontiac gets that. At times, it’s more of a challenge than an ad. They even outright mock the owners of the BMW 5-series! It doesn’t get any better than that. I like the guts.
  5. It’s re-watchable. I’ve watched it 5 times already, and I like it more each time. There’s a lot to see, and I keep finding new subtle cool stuff.

I’m not sure it makes me want to buy a Pontiac (I’m poor), but it got me talking and showing it to other people. There’s not a whole lot more you can ask of a commercial.

Thanks, Pontiac, for having balls, for getting it right, and for giving me a commercial I enjoy watching. Muchos kudos.
